I disagree. Prince
charming has flaws as
well. No one’s perfect,
Dee.”
“O-kayyy… whatever.”
“How long will you be
working with him?”
Mom continued asking
me questions.
“I don’t know mom, he
didn’t say anything
about it. We don’t even
have a contract.”
Mom shook her head in
dismay. “So what is
your job description, his
housekeeper?”
“Er… um… sort of.”
“You were a cashier in
the coffee shop. I was
expecting you to work
the same job.”
I strode towards my
mom, who was sitting
on an armchair. I sat on
the arm rest and
hugged her. “Mom, it
doesn’t matter
anymore. Just think of
the money we’ll be
getting. We will have
enough and we could
save more. I don’t mind
being a housekeeper.
It’s an honest job.”
It was true. We would
have enough money for
my mom’s
supplements and
medical expenses, pay
the bills and house
rental, buy the food
that we used to eat
when dad was still
healthy and alive, buy
new dresses for mom
and Sapphire and even
dine in a restaurant
once in a while. With the
extra money, I could
also save for college. I
would probably enroll in
an online degree
program and work at
the same time.
“You are so kind, Jade.
I’m so lucky to have
you as my daughter.
You shouldered my
responsibility of taking
care of our family. If
only, I could help you…”
My mom started to cry
again because of self
pity. A scene which I
often avoided.
“Shhh… mom, please
stop crying. I love you
and Sapphire. Taking
care of you both is not
a burden. Don’t worry, I
can handle this. I’ll do
my job well, and make
Mr. Petrakis happy with
his coffee. Mom, please
stop crying, it’s not
good for your heart. We
should be glad that I
have a job now, right?”
I wiped the tears on my
mom’s cheeks with the
tissue paper that
Sapphire handed on me.
“Right. We are here for
you, mom. We love you
so much. You gave up
your job before, to look
after us, now is our
turn to take care of
you.” Saph hugged us.
“Hey, why are we
crying, we should
celebrate. Let’s order
some Pizza. My treat
this time.”
“Really? You have
money?”
“Er… no. You pay now,
but promise, I’ll pay you
next week, after the
cosplay contest. I’ll be
dressing up as Yuna.”
Saph’s lips twisted in
embarrassment, while
her hand was
scratching her head.
I shook my head and
just smiled at my
sister. I was convinced
that she would win in
the cosplay event,
because she often did.
The following morning, I
arrived at Eros Petrakis’
apartment, a quarter
before five.
After I passed the
interrogations from the
fully loaded security
guards at the lobby,
they finally let me in. I
was escorted by a man
in black suit, who looked
like Rick Grimes of The
Walking Dead. His eyes
were appraising my
appearance openly,
from my worn out
brown leather boots, to
my green loose dress
with red cherries on it,
and then to my big
black wig. He was
looking at me strangely
as if I came from
another planet. I smiled
at him, and he smiled
back, but suddenly
turned his back on me.
It was just so
awkward.
An older woman opened
the door of the
penthouse. She
introduced herself as
Doris Kelly. She was in
her late fifties, single,
and Irish. She managed
the whole apartment of
Eros Petrakis.
Eros Petrakis’
apartment happened to
be a very luxurious
Hotel penthouse located
at Fifth Avenue on the
Upper East Side of New
York. The 58-storey
building was the
property of the Petrakis
family. The penthouse
occupied the entire
56th, 57th, and 58th
floors. The entire
apartment contained 16
rooms, including 5 en-
suite bedrooms and six
and half bathrooms,
plus 4 terraces with
sweeping views of
Manhattan. The living
spaces were grand with
23-foot-high ceilings,
large windows and
architectural details. A
private elevator
connected all three
floors, and the home
had a separate guest
suite and staff
residences. The place
had a private swimming
pool, a fully equipped
gym, a theatre room, a
library, a music room,
etc.
