Nigeria is blessed with a vibrant rap history. From the efforts of Nutty Pin through to DJ Jimmy Jatt and Jamix’scompilation albums, we have enjoyed great rap music.

Collaborations and cosigns, one of the core traits of rap music, is as historic in Nigeria as any other country. Terry Tha Rapman is a collaboration war horse, same as the other veteransModenine, Ruggedman and 2shotz. Within the past years, we have also enjoyed the skill of the Choc Boiz as M.IIce Prince, and Jesse Jagz injected freshness into the game, forming a triple threat combination that has unlocked many a stereo.

This was the only song where a rapper came close to toppling Modenine’s supremacy. Released in 2007, under Terry’s first album “The Rapman Beginz”. The video shot in sepia featured incredibly young and unknown at the time; Chocolate City bosses, Ice Prince and M.I Abaga.

Beenie Man’s ‘Dude instrumental was sampled a lot all over the world, forming the basis of many great songs. Nigeria has hers, with 2shotz and Biglo dropping the classic ‘Delicious’ single. The song was off 2shotz magnum opus LP, Pirated Copy”.

The alliance of Phyno and Olamide brought together two tribes of the indigenous rap art. Today, both artistes are at the top of their game, and possess a joint album. However, if you trace the beginning of all their good works, ‘Ghost mode’ stands as that single, which marked time, and placed Phyno on the path to greatness. Forget the rapper's Multiply remix. This was Phyno’s second introduction.
Psalmurai, A9mus, and Dasuki made up the Khalifate, a defunct rap group who rocked Nigeria with two albums. Back then on their 2008 Re-Ink-A-Tion album, the ‘Ikira’ remix was produced by Frenzy, who was burning hot at the time. The track features Mo’Dogg (who Wizkid recognizes his studio on ‘Ojuelegba’), S.H.E (who later married Illbliss), a burning T.R,Soul Snatcha and Sokleva (Rooftop Mcs).
The favorite line of the song remains that of Terry Tha Rapman who stunned people with “I heard a rapper dissed me that I wasn't popular in Lagos, I wanna diss him back but I forgot what his name was.”
Released in June 2009, Tha Suspect put together the remix of his single 'I no send you' which featured Wyclef Jean, and a long list of rappers including BlaiseTeetoKemistry and Eva. This is one the few times that Wyclef dropped some bars on a Nigerian song.

DJ Jimmy Jatt’s "The Definition” album is rated as one of the greatest LPs from Nigeria. One of the reasons for that lay in this single. Powered by girl power, ‘Too much’ contains the best of femcees, KemistrySasha P, Blaise, Kemistry, andB.O.U.Q.U.I.
Still off “The Definition” album, Jimmy Jatt drops the heavy-hitting single ‘Jump off’, with 2shotz, T.R and Ruggedman leading the affair. This hit the ground running in 2007.

At the height of their power, the Choc Boiz made up of Jesse Jagz, M.I, and Ice Prince were undisputedly Nigeria’s greatest rap acts. With single after single, hit songs rolling off the label’s conveyor belt, the trio were unstoppable. One of their greatest works ever still remain ‘Nobody test me’, a single housed on Jesse Jagz’s “Jag Of All Tradez” album.
Sitting pretty on Modenine’s dope album – “Da Vinci Mode” – this song features the blazing Overdose, and continued Modenine’s run as one of the best MC’s Nigeria has ever seen.

The song was released in August 2009.
Off his “The Infiltration” mixtape, Cyrus came through with this bar-filled rap single. Released in 2013, the mixtape contained other heavy-hitting tracks and dope rappers.
One of the most famous songs of M.I Abaga, ‘Blaze was part of his highly successful and conceptual album “Talk About It”. The song, which is centered around weed, contains a budding Choc Boiz collaboration with Jesse Jagz and Ice Prince showing off, and a verse from Blaise.
Rap veteran Freestyle and Blaise came together in 2006, and created what has become one of Nigerian Hip-hop best collaboration. Off his one and only album “ Free At Last”, the song still resonates among rap heads in Nigeria.

Djinee’s remix of his ‘Overkillin’ stands out as one of the best collaborations of Nigeria. The single features Chocolate City’s trio of rap stars – M.I, Jesse Jagz, and Ice Prince.
Produced by Mr Smith in 2003, ‘Livin It Up’ had a number of rappers repping their hoods and just spitting. This song shows the rap side of Blackface, and comedian man Basketmouth. 12-minute long, the video was shot by the Late Nomoreloss.
Terry Tha Rapman jumped on the hit song by Stereoman, and enlisted the help of Pherowshuz. Together the trio made a rap song that lives on to this day.
The remix of ‘Owo Ati Swagga’ contains dope work from Gino, the prolific Terry Tha Rapman, a surging Dagrin, and the budding Eva. It was released in 2009.
In 2011, Jahbless brought together acts to create rap music. Set in an open air boxing ring, the visual featured Ice Prince, Reminisce, Ruggedman, and eLDee. Durella even threw in a verse.
Here’s Ikechukwu’s true rap resume, where he went against M.I and stood on the same level as the Chocolate City demi-god. 'We go hard' was released in 2009, off Ikechukwu’s “Life and Times of Killz Vol. 1” album.
Tec and Ghost, the members of Show Dem Camp came up with this reflective jewel, 'Dreamer' in 2011.
Stylee was DJ Jimmy Jatt‘s first and official single from his debut album, The Definition. It featured 2face who was enjoying a  growing yet fruitful career, Mode 9 who still retains title as rap’s revered and hip-hop emcee, ElaJoe.

‘Stylee’ was one of such songs that gave an actual insight about a typical life on the hard hustling streets of Lagos. The uber successful track enjoyed heavy airplay across various radio frequencies and the music video stayed on MTV Africa countdown for several weeks. It also got a well-deserved Channel O Africa music video award nomination.
