Britain’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Andrew Pocock, has said for Nigeria to successfully overcome the backdrop of increasing serial attacks by Boko Haram, the country must properly equip its military.
He stated this during a session with journalists in Kaduna on Wednesday, July 8.
The British High Commissioner also said that the Federal Government should develop better systems for security, as well as an economic agenda for the people of the North-East and other
areas affected.
Pocock blamed the recent bombings in the North to lack of cohesion among security agencies and other stakeholders, noting that the only way to defeat the terrorists is to make Nigeria’s security forces stronger.
He said rather than Nigeria waiting for help from foreign countries, the country should be able to procure weapons to tackle extremists, with the amount allotted to defence in the budget.
The commissioner explained that, rather than helping Nigeria with weapons or troops in the ongoing war against terror, Britain could support the country by training and retraining its military personnel in order to make them more effective on the field.
He added that the only way the abducted Chibok girls could be rescued from the insurgents is for the military to defeat them.
In a related development, the Islamist terror group Boko Haram is offering to free more than 200 young women and girls kidnapped from Chibok if the militant leaders held by the government are released.
