Simi & Falz: Are We Forcing These Two Artistes Into A Relationship?

The Nigerian media should move beyond the obsession of making Falz and Simi a couple.

Every celebrity site in Nigeria you read now will most likely have an article or two about the supposed chemistry between Nigerian rapper Falz and fast rising singer Simi.
For months now, the media has been infatuated in creating a relationship between Falz and Simi, even if it is an imaginary one.

The two talented artistes have had a brief working chemistry which has sparked off these rumours. In June 2015, Falz played the role of Simi's love interest in her music video 'Jamb Question'. A few tongues waggled about the possibility of a relationship but it wasn't anything serious.

In March 2013, Simi returned the favour by not only featuring on Falz's track 'Soldier' off his second album released in 2015 but by playing his love interest. Maybe it was the unique concept of the video or the on screen chemistry of Falz and Simi, but by the time the video went viral people had started saying Falz and Simi were dating.

This is not the first time the media is matching two artistes who have worked together. When M.I featured Waje on his song 'One Naira' it was rumoured that they were dating. This is the pattern of the traditional media society in Nigeria that equates musical chemistry for love chemistry. Moving back to the 80's it was said the Juju legend King Sunny Ade was in a relationship with the Elegant Stallion Onyeka Onwenu because they did a song together. This is the way it has always been.

It is refreshing to see Falz and Simi not taking advantage of the rumours for press mentions and publicity. In interviews they have stated that they are not dating. The rapper during his recent sit-down session with Dorcas Shola Fapson for the new episode of ‘The Juice’, was quick to say the songstress is currently in a relationship and it isn't with him.
"Simi and I is just music. It’s musical chemistry, we get along so well," he said, adding, "There’s no triangle. She does have a boyfriend and it is not me."
While declining to reveal the identity of Simi’s supposed heartthrob, he said, "I’m in no position to announce a matter that relates to her own relationship because it’s not my relationship. But I know that she do have somebody and it’s not me," he responded in his famous faux accent. Rumours have it that she is dating YBNL singer Adekunle Gold but that's another story for another day.

Simi, in an interview published by Hip TV, denied that anything is going on between her and Falz, except for the apparent professional relationship.
Stating that she could actually date the rapper, but she is not giving thought to the matter because it is not an option for her at the moment, she said,“I don’t mind dating Falz, he’s a human being. When I say we have not thought about it because why would you be thinking about something that is not in the books. Falz is my friend and that is all there is to it.
Despite their denials the media is obsessed in making Falz and Simi an item. The fact that they both covered a magazine recently does not help matters. The traditional Nigerian media should move beyond faux-relationships and dig up more exciting news.
