The CHP tweeted a photo of the sea lion emerging from the water near the highway.
"This little one will soon be on his way somewhere safe and away from the road," the tweet read.
The CHP said an off-duty officer chased the sea lion out of the road before experts with the Marine Mammal Center arrived and placed it in a carrier.
Officials said the sea lion was captured in the same area where a 900-pound elephant seal repeatedly blocked traffic in December 2015.
