LASSA FEVER: 3 Infected, 2 At Large - In Kaduna

Muhammed Sani Ibrahim, Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) during a press brief on the Lassa fever outbreak stated that another health worker has been infected with the virus in Kaduna.

He assured the press that proper measures have been taken as the health worker is currently isolated and receiving treatments at the Infectious Diseases Centre (IDC) in kakuri, Kaduna south local government of the state.
Ibrahim added that 2 patients suspected to have the virus were at large. He described the patients as one male from Kachia hospital and the other a female from Kawo general hospital.
The NMA chairman stated that the association is creating awareness, teaching preventive measures, sensitizing clinicians in both private and public setups to observe a very high index of suspicion and to observe universal precautions as they handle patients in all facilities.

“We are aware of the various efforts of the federal and state governments in the creation and circulation of management protocols as well as supply of the antiviral drug( Ribavirin) which if given early can reduce morbidity and mortality.’’
“We are also aware of the efforts of the state Epidemiology Unit and the State Rapid Response team who have ensured a timely response to all reports in the state.”

Recently, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) stated that it has plans to fumigate Abuja to fight the Lassa fever.
Also, Alhaji Suleiman Alege, the Commissioner of Health in Kwara, on Friday said the state had not recorded any case of Lassa fever.
