Senate Warns Buhari Against Undermining The 8th Senate

The senate on Thursday 26th November 2015, warned President Muhammadu Buhari to refrain from allowing appointees assume roles without confirmation from the senate.

This statement was made by Ike Ekweremadu during the confirmation of Umaru Garba Danbatta, the
executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Ekweremmadu noted that although Danbatta is the right candidate for the position, he assumed office since nomination, however, he urged the executive to give due respect to the senate by waiting for its confirmation before assuming duty.
“He has been working without being confirmed, this senate will no longer tolerate that.
“The President will do us the honor of getting the approval of the senate,”he said
While supporting Ekweremadu’s contribution, Biodun Olujimi, the Deputy minority whip, recalled the role of the senate in confirmation of appointees for various positions.
“The senate should be honoured; when we have cases like this they should be cleared here before they resume duty,”she said.
Bukola Saraki, the senate president concurred with his colleagues while ruling on the confirmation warned the executive arm of government to desist from their actions as it will not be tolerated anymore.
“Executive should ensure that the nominees come for confirmation before assumptions of duty,” Saraki added.
Those confirmed include Ahmed Kuru as Managing Director, Kola Ayeye, Eberechukwu Uneze and Aminu Ismail as Executive Directors of the company.
Their confirmation also followed the consideration of the Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial institutions who had earlier screened the appointees.
